Description
Toyota Locking Glovebox Insert. I created this just like I do all of my products, out of necessity.
1984-1988/89 Toyota Trucks and 4Runners are notoriously easy to break into, and did not come with any kind of a locking glovebox from the factory. My personal 1989 4Runner has a Softopper on it, so it has zero security for when it is parked.
This 16G Box is designed to make the maximum of your space while providing extra security inside the OEM Glovebox. Laser Cut, CNC Press Bent, and Hand TIG Welded by Hugh Himself, these fit nicely and discreetly inside your truck. Incognito is good.
We all know the factory glovebox is pretty dinky, and if someone wanted, they could just yank it off of the dash – so provisions for a heavy duty cable are included. This cable loops around the steel crossbar behind the dash, and if your vinyl cover between the dash and glovebox is still intact, no one is the wiser. A short leash if you will, its not going far.
Of course, nothing is 100% secure in this world, we don’t claim as much. Think of this as a deterrent. An extra piece of mind. Hell, it beats hiding your wallet under the seat that’s for sure. *It is also not a bad idea to install a kill switch inside the glovebox, these vehicles are going up in value and theft has been a big problem since they were new. A common modification that we should all look into.
Install is simple, with basic hand tools and the only modification to the vehicle is a small hole drilled in the back of the plastic glovebox for the cable. Otherwise basic hand tools work a dandy.
Now with FREE Powdercoating – I’ve added that to my shop abilities, and no extra cost to you folks.
Comes with Hardware, Lock Cylinder with 2 Keys, Cable System, and detailed PDF instructions (Pay Attention at Checkout, Downloadable Instructions). And as always, a few HHB stickers…

I searched high and low for a solution like this to prevent losing valuables in a smash and grab. Low and behold, Hugh created a sleek solution that doesn’t mess up the original 80’s aesthetics of my 1st gen. This is a great alternative to the ugly Tuffy boxes and janky ammo can consoles. Very happy with it! Now if only we can get him to design a locking insert for the factory center consoles!

This is a quality product that fit perfectly! Hugh is great to work with and I hope he plans on making other options for my 3rd gen Tacoma!

I love this locking glovebox insert. It’s so well built and thought out. I don’t feel like I lost any space inside the glovebox but I can now leave my wallet or phone in the truck to go run at a park and not worry about it being stolen. Now for all my other Toyota’s please!

This is a very well thought out lockbox that fits the glovebox flawlessly. It’s set up for the end user to add their own free thought and custom taste with color and possibly add a handle or knob. I installed this without issue and it’s adds a much needed security feature while riding around town especially with the top off. I want to also mention that the customer service is awesome and Hugh really cared to ensure that the purchase process was smooth. I very highly recommend this if you are thinking about pulling the trigger on one.

Security problems come in all shapes and sizes. When a Man (or Woman) gets out of his truck to check an irrigation set, the last thing he wants to come back to is his 6 year old having vaccinated his 2 and 4 year olds against Bovine Rhinitis and pondering whether they both might need a 20cc dose of penicillin to boot. This glove box liner is an effective deterrent to the above detailed scenario. I say deterrent because said 4 and 6 year olds with framing hammers can probably get the box separated from the dash, armed with a set of Moore Maker fencing pliers they might come close to severing the cable. This glove box liner will easily hold 2 sets of quality fencing pliers along with cow doctoring supplies, but not a full size framing hammer.
Enough about the Torch Ranch and my buddy Sexy Tyler’s rowdy boys.
The directions that come with this box are clear and concise. Pictures and notes in the pictures equally clear. The fit, finish and quality are superb. Design is brilliant. Installation quick and easy using tools any Gen 2 Toyota owner should already have. Price is incredibly reasonable. I defy you to make one yourself as high a quality with as good a fit for less than twice or three times the price. Perhaps if your materials are free and your time is worth shit? Hugh’s customer service is exceptional and shipping is prompt and reasonable. As another reviewer said, “If you’re on the fence, pull the trigger!” You won’t regret it, consider how you would explain to your spouse about the vaccination debacle, remember how well the waste oil splash fight went over?

Made by a 1st gen owner himself. Added peace of mind is priceless. Super fast shipping. Extremely well made. Easy to install. What more could you ask for?

I picked this up a year and I love it. At the beach or the river and I can do whatever knowing my stuff is secure. Great quality and super easy to install. Excellent quality and highly recommend. On top of everything else, Hugh was excellent with his correspondence. Shipping and logistics has been hard but Hugh made it a point to keep me in the loop. Thanks again Hugh for making a great product and for the customer service

Hugh – my sincere thanks for elegantly solving my discomfort every time I walked away from my truck. Your build quality: fit and welding (no discernible loss of space in the glovebox) are point perfect. I kept it at my bedside for a week prior to install because I was so damn happy looking at it. Not quite, but kind of like having a newborn. And at the great risk of my wife asking what they hell is that thing. I have been sitting in the passenger seat opening and closing the glovebox and opening and closing the lockbox just to action it and marvel. I added my Hugh’s Hand Built sticker after painting with the same black paint I use on my rock sliders. I lined the bottom with an adhesive backed / high-temperature sheet of rubber and I am guessing this will keep things quiet inside. A bonus is the steel allows my magnetic flashlight to mount to the interior sidewall of the lockbox and acts as a nifty glovebox light. The instructions were super straight forward and it took me less than 15 minutes after carefully reading them twice, which I almost never do, so good on me for once. Thank you, Hugh!

Just installed it directions were great no problems besides me being a dumbass and taking a while to figure out the locking mechanism. Now I feel safe to take the top off :). Definitely recommend from me as it doesn’t take away from the snappy stock glovebox.
